_The Story Behind The Story:
This has been an ongoing project of mine since I first put virtual pen to virtual paper back in November of 2006.
HIGHLAND VENGEANCE began from a wellspring of frustration I felt when I came to the end of The Bride, by Julie Garwood. I'd read the book multiple times (as I have most of her historical romances), but I still wanted to know MORE about Mary and Daniel's relationship. Julie teased us with such a great set up for those characters. (Mary is the sister of The Bride's heroine, Jamie, who is also forced into an unwanted marriage to a Scottish Highlander, the friend of Jamie's new husband, Alec). This last time that I read it, I just had to know what happened between them. So, I decided, "I'll just write my own version, so that from now on, I'll always know Mary and Daniel's story, too."
Well, needless to say, it only took a matter of minutes (a paragraph or two) for me to realize I had NO IDEA what Julie would do with those characters, nor did I know how to make those characters behave in the way she would. So, I had to abandon the idea (and I'm still waiting and hoping that Julie will PLEASE write their story already!).
But I discovered something in those few paragraphs I wrote: A kernel of an idea began to take shape--completely different from Julie Garwood's story--and it wouldn't let me go. So, I just kept writing. And writing. And writing. In fact, by the time I was finished with it (a mammoth 160K words later, LOL!), I'd already conceived of two more stories that directly connected to this one. More an ongoing family saga than three separate stories that tell the tales of the supporting characters from the last.
Well, it's five years later and it's finally ready to be published.
It's written in six parts, which lends itself perfectly to serializing, which I did. I've put the first part out for FREE at most major (and some minor) retail outlets. Check out it's info page and purchase links here.
Set in the turn of the thirteenth century Scottish Highlands, this is the story of Daniel MacLaurin, a handsome, rugged warrior-laird haunted by his past, and Maryn Donald, the beautiful, high-spirited lass destined to help him find his heart's ease.
After his mother and grandfather, the only family he has ever known, are viciously murdered in a surprise invasion when he is a lad of 13, Daniel spends years focusing on training as a warrior and rebuilding his fortress, determined to control the world around him so that nothing like it will ever happen again.
Maryn Donald is a wild child; a lass who, as the only offspring of her widowed father, has been indulged in her high-spiritedness. So much so, that she takes matters into her own hands when she sees that the neighboring clan is mistreating their horses. She impetuously steals them and then, as recompense for her crime, must wed the powerful, wealthy young laird about whom she's heard such disturbing rumors: Daniel MacLaurin.
He's a man who needs to be in control. She's a woman who doesn't recognize boundaries. He's a man who likes a plan. She's a woman who likes to take risks. But, they both are passionate, have wicked senses of humor, are caretakers by nature and have a deep desire to build a family. It makes for quite a degree of push and pull, heat and tension between the two.
HIGHLAND VENGEANCE is a steamy romance, but it is also a family saga. It's the story of how a man overcomes the horror of his past to find love, connection, and contentment once more.
